I was SHOOK at the ending of the book. I’m not going to lie, I did not see it coming. Wow, not only did this book make me CRY, but it was the kind of cry where you get choked up and can’t make a sound so the tears silently fall from your eyes. It was that heartwrenching! Tijan gave both of the MCs so much depth and challenged them to make it through everything they were both struggling with.
Mackenzie and Ryan both, wow. What she goes through, losing her twin sister. I can’t even imagine. The author does a amazing job or trying to show her struggle and how she's coping with the tragic loss. Also learning about what Ryan had to overcome before Mackenzie show up, that’s heartbreaking too. They are both these fragile individuals but with so much inner strength and resilience.
My heart was literally breaking for Makenzie, her family, and Ryan. He was right there feeling her pain and saving her from herself when she needed it the WHOLE book, from the moment Mac accidentally wanders into his bed. From that moment he’s supporting her, letting her grieve in her own way, and loving her along the way.
I love them together.
I know suicide is a taboo subject and this book was well written in that regard. It’s not trying to glamorize it. The story isn’t told in a condescending manner. It shows all her facets of grief, the denial, the anger, the crying at night when she thinks nobody can hear her, and the projecting the anger onto girls at school.
It literally had my heart breaking for her.
I will say that this book is set in a highschool setting, all the characters are 18, and if you're not into YA romance, this might not be the book for you. If you are into YA Romance and don't mind reading from a highschoolers POV, which we all remember highschool... then this book is for you if: you're looking for a book that will break your heart and then put it back together!
